Piano Roll Improvers: The piano roll in FL Studio has
always been a major asset to the product and the most notable of the updates
within FL Studio 10 is the focus on its workflow enhancements combined with some
creative and powerful visual improvers. To this end FL Studio 10 certainly
delivers. The upgrades to the piano roll in particular are superb. There is an
extended zoom to the side keyboard, an improved autoscroll when moving events
around and a complete overall of FL’s midi note interactivity. Midi notes in
the piano roll now carry embedded part information making ‘midi parts’ easy to
identify in the piano roll. For example; control & clicking on a note in
the piano roll selects all the corresponding midi notes specific to that note
row. When a series of notes are played the piano highlights each individual
note hit when triggered by the sequence or midi pattern.
FL Studio 10 now suports midi note
‘slip editing’ from both left and right selectors of a midi note. A new
velocity level meter provide a useful visual guide to the velocity status of any
given midi note in the piano roll. The new velocity levels also reflect
real-time adjustments
made during the editing process making a colour
adjustment to the midi note to reflect it’s velocity intensity. Another new
feature affecting both the playlist and the piano roll in FLStudio 10 is the
new ‘magic lasso’ feature located in the ‘Select’ sub-menu. This quirky option
allows the user to make a rapid circular selection of midi notes or events
without the use of a ‘click’.
There is a very impressive piano roll feature which elevates FL Studio into
the realm of sublime, namely, the piano roll ‘Waveform view’. This outstanding
feature allows you to drag and drop a waveform from the view window of any
sampler channel into the piano roll as a powerful visual aid when composing and
editing. Combining this feature with the option to view other midi channels as
‘Ghost Channels’ in the same piano roll window is simply amazing and a stroke of
pure genius.
There is a much improved and streamlined ‘Zoom’
function in FL Studio 10 which makes for a very slick user workflow in both the
piano roll and the playlist. Using the mouse wheel with the keyboard ‘Control’
& ‘Alt’ keys allows for a rapid zoom in and out of a project window.
Pressing and holding the mouse wheel and dragging left or right will rapidly
scroll through a midi pattern or project. The piano roll in FL Studio 10 is a
detailed and highly functional MIDI engine which, in my opinion, is the best out
there and second to none. Learning the combinations of keyboard with mouse
shortcuts for the enhanced zoom features in FL Studio 10 is an absolute must to
get your workflow up to a even faster speed than previously possible.
A note on pattern
blocks: For some users already FL Studio 10 has caused 
a bit of a stir, for others, the new direction has been
heartily received and given a warm welcome. FL Studio 10 begins the radical
departure from the use of ‘pattern blocks’ as a midi and playlist feature.
Instead, Image-Line prefer to promote the use of midi ‘pattern clips’ as
introduced in version 7. The removal of pattern blocks was deemed a necessary
requirement by the Image-Line design team to allow FL Studio to develop as a
professional audio production suite and, therefore, meet future music production
demands. That said, FL Studio 10 does provide the option to revert back to
pattern blocks by activating the ‘enable legacy pattern blocks’ found under the
‘General Settings’ tab. However, the long term intention is to remove pattern
blocks entirely as well as the option to revert to legacy patterns.
